Q & A

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19, or the novel coronavirus, is a contagious upper respiratory disease discovered at the end of 2019. Shortly after discovery, the virus spread worldwide, causing a global pandemic.

Because of vaccines and therapeutics, it’s possible to reduce the risk of COVID-19. Even so, if you experience flu-like symptoms, it’s vital to get tested. Once you receive the results, you can determine what steps to take next.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Symptoms of COVID-19 include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Gastrointestinal issues, like nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Difficulty breathing
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Runny nose
  • Congestion
  • Diarrhea

Symptoms may change with new COVID variants and can vary depending on vaccination status.

How is COVID-19 diagnosed?

TCS Health diagnoses COVID-19 with rapid polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) tests. PCR tests are considered the gold standard for COVID testing.

During a PCR test, your TCS Health provider collects a sample of mucus from your nose.  This is done by a very shallow nasal swab. Certified Technicians analyze your sample for the presence of multiple viral genes. If there’s genetic material from COVID-19, it means you’re infected.

PCR tests boast a 95% efficacy rate, according to a 2021 Cochrane Review. What’s more, the test can determine if you have influenza (the seasonal flu) or the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) with one swab.

How long does it take to receive the results of a COVID-19 test?

TCS Health provides COVID-19 test results within 45 minutes or less. Since PCR tests are the most accurate and reliable method available, you can feel confident in the results. After you receive the results, our health providers can make recommendations to protect your loved ones and other close contacts, including prescribing proper medications.

Why would I need COVID-19 testing?

TCS Health provides COVID-19 testing for various reasons, including but not limited to:

  • Clearance for events (weddings, family get togethers, baby showers)
  • Clearance for travel
  • Clearance to attend school
  • Clearance to undergo medical procedures
  • Clearance for sports
  • Testing just because

To ensure COVID-19 testing is quick and convenient, TCS provides COVID tests on a walk-in basis for all patients, regardless of if they’re symptomatic or asymptomatic.  Appointments take priority over walk-ins.

How can I prevent COVID-19?

There’s no way to prevent COVID-19 entirely, but there are steps you can take to reduce your risk. TCS Health recommends to follow CDC guidelines for your area and always take percautions that work best for you and your loved ones.

If you’re concerned you might have COVID-19, make an appointment at TCS Health by calling the nearest office or booking online today.  Also walk-ins are always welcome.
