HAIR TESTING

Hair testing measures the drug molecules and metabolites within the hair shaft, rather than body fluids, to determine if drugs of abuse are present.  Hair testing provides a longer history of drug exposure than any other testing method, making it an excellent tool for positions where there is zero tolerance for drug use.  There are a couple of dwon sides to hair testing such as - turn around time for results is greater than all other testing and it is NOT a good method of testing for post accident or reasonable suspicion testing because of the time it takes hair to grow out of the scalp.  The up side of hair testing is it does offer an increased window of detection.

BREATH ALCOHOL TESTING (Please note Urine and Hair Alcohol are listed above)

Breath Alcohol testing can detect if someone is presently under the influence. The breath alcohol test measures the amount of alcohol in the blood by testing exhaled air. The test is performed by blowing into a breath machine 15 minutes after alcohol consumption. The test determines how much alcohol it takes to raise the blood-alcohol level to a dangerous level.  When choosing among our alcohol testing options, your choice should be guided by the circumstances prompting you to order the test. Alcohol detection tests can measure alcohol in the blood for up to 6 hours, on the breath for approximately 12 hours (a breath test needs to be confirmed to make sure it is not residual alcohol), urine for 12 to 24 hours (72 or more hours with more advanced detection methods), saliva for 12 to 24 hours, and hair for up to 90 days. For example, if you suspect someone is drinking on the job the best type of testing to choose is either a breath alcohol test or urine alcohol (saliva would not be ideal do to inability to capture a proper specimen) to provide a more definitive answer without violating a person's right to consume alcohol when off work.  If a person is required to remain sober over a long period of time (because of a certain employment agreements, court orders, a child custody arrangements, or a number of other reasons) choose the alcohol test best suits the situation at hand.

Breathalyzers detect someone's current intoxication level. This is the most appropriate test to use in the workplace if alcohol use is suspected, or as a standard test after any accidents. Breath alcohol tests should be given as soon as possible after an accident or upon reasonable suspicion of on the job use. Please note for DOT testing rules are defined under the DOT agency and TCS follows ALL guidelines that are written under agency authority.

TCS can dispatch a certified technician for on-site drug and alcohol testing.

Q & A

What is drug testing?

Drug testing analyzes a sample of your blood, urine, saliva, hair or other body components for the presence of prescription medication, alcohol, or illicit drugs. If you’ve recently been offered a new job you might need a drug test.  If you perform safety sensitive duites under FMCSA, FRA, FAA, FTA, PHMSA or USCG you are required to undergo drug and alcohol testing according to those operating authorities.

Drug testing is a prevention and deterrent method that is often part of a comprehensive drug-free workplace program. Any workplace drug-testing program, Federal and non-federal, should comply with applicable local, state, and federal laws.

DOT has very specific testing that is completed according to DOT guidelines

Why would I need a drug test?

Drug tests vary, depending on what types of drugs are being tested for and what types of specimens are being collected. Urine, hair, saliva (oral fluid), breath or other body components.

In federally regulated programs, only urine/oral fluid and breath samples are collected.

Tests are commonly used for five categories of drugs: Amphetamines; Cocaine Marijuana; Opiates; and Phencyclidine (PCP). Additional categories may include Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines, Ethanol (alcohol), Hydrocodone, MDMA, Methadone, Methaqualone, or Propoxyphene.

Drug testing may be used in the following set times or circumstances:

  • Pre-employment: You can make passing a drug test a condition of employment. With this approach, all job candidates will receive drug testing prior to being hired.  Please always follow state, local and federal laws.
  • Annual Physical Tests: You can test your employees for alcohol and other drug use as part of an annual physical examination. Be sure to inform employees that drug-testing will be part of the exam. Failure to provide prior notification is a violation of the employee's constitutional rights.  Please always follow state, local and federal laws.
  • Reasonable Suspicion and/or For-Cause Tests: You may decide to test employees who show discernible signs of being unfit for duty (for-cause testing), or who have a documented pattern of unsafe work behavior (reasonable suspicion testing.) These kinds of tests help to protect the safety and wellbeing of the employee and other coworkers.  Please always follow state, local and federal laws.
  • Post-accident Tests: Testing employees who were involved in a workplace accident or unsafe practices can help determine whether alcohol or other drug use was a contributing factor to the incident.  Please always follow state, local and federal laws.
  • Return-to-Duty: If an employee has tested positive or disclosed drug or alcohol abuse and have been referred to a substance abuse program should undergo a return to work drug test after completing the substance abuse program or by recommendation of the substance abuse coordinator.  Please always follow state, local and federal laws.
  • Follow-up: Testing employees who return to work after completing a rehabilitation program can encourage employees to remain drug and alcohol free.
  • Random Tests: Tests using an unpredictable selection process are the most effective for deterring illicit drug use.  Please always follow state, local and federal laws.

DOT has very specific testing gudielines that need to be complied with according to the DOT agency that personnel must comply with

ALL DRUG TESTING MUST BE DONE ACCORDING TO STATE, LOCAL, AND FEDERAL LAWS.

ALL TESTING MUST BE DONE ACCORDING TO A SPECIFIC COMPANY POLICY FOR BOTH DOT AND NON-DOT TESTING.

Who conducts the drug or alcohol test?

Tests are done by a trained collector who visits your workplace to collect specimens, or employees may go to a certified collection clinic. To ensure accuracy, the specimen’s chain of custody must be continuous from commencement of the test until disposal of the test.

When will I receive the results of my drug test?

TCS Health tries to provide same-day drug test results whenever possible.

Ensuring the accuracy of drug-testing results is critical. Using a certified laboratory to test the specimens and a Medical Review Officer (MRO) to interpret the test results will help prevent inaccurate testing. MROs are licensed physicians who receive laboratory results and have knowledge of substance use disorders and federal drug-testing regulations. MROs are trained to interpret and evaluate test results together with the employee’s medical history and other relevant information.  Most drug tests are reported within 24 hours if negative and 72 hours if positive.  Additional circumstances may apply such as the employee tests positive and the MRO is reaching out to find biomedical and prescription information and the employee does not return the phone calls or the required documentation, or weather delays for delivery of specimens, or

A negative test result does not indicate that an employee has never used alcohol or illicit drugs, nor is it a guarantee against future use.  Diluted test results is NOT considered a negative test.
